Frequently Asked Questions

What is EMConnect?

EMConnect is a telemedicine service that connects patients and facilities with emergency medicine providers for rapid, high-quality virtual care. It offers immediate access to experienced clinicians who can assess symptoms, provide treatment, and determine if an in-person evaluation is needed.

What is a telemedicine visit, and how does it work?

A telemedicine visit is a secure, real-time video or phone consultation with a licensed medical provider. You can connect using a smartphone, tablet, or computer. During the visit, the provider reviews symptoms, asks clinical questions, performs a visual assessment, and gives treatment recommendations. If needed, they can prescribe medications or determine if in-person evaluation is required.

When should I use telemedicine instead of going to the ER?

Telemedicine is ideal for non-life-threatening medical concerns where quick evaluation is helpful. Common examples include minor infections, medication questions, skin issues, changes in chronic conditions, respiratory symptoms that are not severe, flu/cold, substance or alcohol use disorder or concern after a minor injury. If red-flag symptoms are present such as chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke symptoms, or major trauma an in-person emergency evaluation is required.

Who will I be speaking with during the telemedicine consult?

You will be evaluated by a licensed medical provider who is board-certified in emergency medicine and FROM the Western New York region.

What equipment do I need?

Most visits can be completed using any device capable of running video: a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.

Do I need to download or create an account?

No. EMConnect does not require any downloads, apps, or account creation.

Will my insurance cover telemedicine?

Most insurance plans including Medicare and many commercial carriers cover telemedicine services. Coverage varies by plan, state, and service type. The bets practice is to review your insurance benefits for accurate eligibility.

Will I receive a bill or co-pay?

Depending on your insurance plan, a co-pay or deductible may apply.

Is telemedicine more affordable than an in-person visit?

Yes. Telemedicine is often significantly more affordable than urgent care or emergency department visits. For patients who prefer not to bill their insurance or whose plans carry higher co-pays there is an option to pay a flat fee of $75 for the visit.

Can telemedicine providers prescribe medications?

Yes. Providers can electronically send prescriptions to your preferred pharmacy. Controlled substances are not typically prescribed during telemedicine visits.

Is the video platform HIPAA-compliant?

Yes. The telemedicine system uses encrypted, secure communication platforms that meet all HIPAA privacy and security standards.

Will my visit be recorded?

No. Telemedicine visits are not recorded. Only clinical documentation is created, just like an in-person visit.

What happens if the connection fails?

If video is interrupted, the provider will attempt to reconnect. If the issue continues, the visit will be rescheduled, depending on the situation and clinical need.
